Edo launches campaign to curb drug abuse

Worried by the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the Edo State Government has embarked on a comprehensive sensitisation campaign to combat the trends.

Newnaija reports that the state government noted that drug-related issues accounted for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation in the state.

The Permanent Secretary of Social Development and Gender, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, flagged off the programme in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

Osobajo, represented by Mr Sylvester Okeguale, the Director of the Rehabilitation Department, said the initiative would be replicated in Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts, respectively, later in the month.

She said the programme tagged “Catch Them Young” was aimed at educating schoolchildren and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness.

She said in response to the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the ministry has initiated a programme to combat substance abuse.

According to her: “Our children are the future, but the future is now under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth,”

“The message emphasised the urgency and collective responsibility required to address the issue,” she said.

Earlier, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, who commended the state government’s efforts, emphasised the critical need for community engagement.

Marvelous, however, noted that addressing drug abuse requires a multifaceted approach, involving parents, educational institutions, and community organisations.

While emphasising the crucial role parents play in preventing substance abuse, he encouraged them to stay actively involved in their children’s lives to mitigate the influence of peer pressure.

The local government council boss called for a united front to ensure that youth receive the necessary guidance and support.

On his part, Mr. Purpose Ehigie, the facilitator, who delivered a comprehensive presentation, shed more light on the alarming dangers of substance abuse.

Eigie, who called for vigilance, highlighted the risks associated with prescription medications, alcohol, and other seemingly harmless substances.

He noted that curbing substance abuse among youths demanded proactive measures.

Ehigie, however, advocated that early education and intervention are key to empowering children and adolescents to develop healthy habits and coping mechanisms.

“This approach aims to “catch them young” and foster a safer, healthier future,” he added.
