The Adamawa State Government has commenced the fumigation of houses, drainages and refuse dumps in the twin municipal local government areas of Yola South and Yola North.

The exercise is aimed at containing the possible spread of cholera and curtailing incidents of malaria.

This is coming days after the government confirmed the loss of 12 lives and hospitalization of 304 others due to a cholera outbreak recorded in Jimeta, Yola North LGA.

Addressing the fumigators on behalf of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Commissioner for Education, Dr Umar Garba-Pella, asked the health officers to ensure house-to-house disinfections of the over 20 wards in the Yola metropolis.

Pella, a part of the government team that inspected the sanitation exercise of the day, said the government had dedicated the September monthly sanitation to curb cholera.

“Fumigators are required to desilt the drainages to facilitate free flow of water to contain flooding,” he told newsmen.

He urged residents to support the exercise, adding that fumigation would destroy dangerous insects like mosquitoes and ensure a healthy environment.

A resident of Shagari Estate in Yola South, Mr Shehu Aliyu who heads the Shagari Community Association, described the initiative of the government as timely.

“The reintroduction of the monthly sanitation is a good measure to tackle cholera and malaria associated with this season,” Aliyu said.
