A devastating fire in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State has claimed the life of a man known as Obinna.
The tragic incident took place on the evening of Saturday, October 5, 2024, around 7:30 p.m., at a residential building located at No. 13, Olarenwaju Street, off Oki Street.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the details of the incident in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday. According to Hundeyin, the police received a distress call from a concerned resident, prompting the Divisional Police Officer of the Oke-Odo Division to respond quickly with operatives to assess the situation.
Emergency services, including the fire department, were alerted and dispatched to the scene. Despite their efforts, a tenant who was asleep in his room at the time of the fire was found deceased upon the flames being extinguished.
“The pictures of the victim and the building were taken,” Hundeyin noted, confirming that the victim’s remains have been transported to the General Hospital in Yaba for a post-mortem examination.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and an investigation is ongoing to uncover the circumstances leading to this tragic incident. The police are working diligently to provide clarity on how the fire ignited and spread.
