Newnaija Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume says the Federal Government remains commited to repositioning the nation’s education sector, adding that any nation that toys with education is toying with the destiny of its citizens.
The Federal Government scribe said this when a delegation from the Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU) led by its President, Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
He underscored what he described as the pivotal role education plays in the development of any nation and the efforts of the present administration to improve the sector’s performance
Akume commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for providing what he described as quality infrastructure across different tertiary institutions in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
He urged his visitors to complement Government’s efforts in the development of the nation’s tertiary institutions, while promising that industrial action will soon be a thing of the past under the present administration.
Akume however urged the leadership of tertiary institutions to always tow the path of dialogue rather than resorting to strikes.
The President of the Conference of Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities (CAANU) Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu told his host that the purpose of the visit was to celebrate what he described as Akume’s uncommon achievements, from a humble background, through the civil service to the pinnacle of political leadership as aptly summarised in its book soon to be published: “George Akume: Legacy of Service, Leadership and Vision”
Prof. Ochefu also highlighted his association intended collaboration with the government to enhance value for respective alma maters in the country and their role in improving the operations of tertiary institutions in the country.
He also appealed to Federal Government to consider its members for appointments into the Governing Councils of federal tertiary institutions and on Federal Boards as well as those deserving of national honours.
The highpoint of the event was the presentation of a biography of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation titled: “George Akume: Legacy of Service, Leadership and Vision” by the leadership of CAANU.
