Newnaija A former Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Edward Adamu has told the Federal Capital Territory High Court that his erstwhile boss, Godwin Emefiele did not follow laid down procedure for the controversial re-design of some Nigerian currency notes.
At the trial on Wednesday, Adamu who is the fourth prosecution while being examined by Counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Rotimi Oyedepo said the design on currency notes currently in circulation are slightly different from that approved by former President Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria Board, of which he was then a member.
Adamu, who was a staff of the CBN for over 31 years including his time as a Deputy governor told the court that the re-design plans originates from the Director of Currency Operations and then to the Committee Of Governors who passes it to the Board for approval before it gets to the President.
Adamu claimed that Emefiele circumvented the process by simply calling for a meeting of the Committee of Governors, which he showed a Presidential approval for redesign which he subsequently proceeded to implement same.
Cross examined by Defence Counsel, Olalakan Ojo, Adamu said there must be a Board recommendation before any approved currency redesign can be implemented.
Asked if he was privy to any discussion between the Emefiele and former President Buhari on how the redesign should be done, he answered in the negative.
